“You will never know what it cost my generation to preserve your freedom. It is my hope that you will make good use of it," quoted State Board of Education District 14 Member Evelyn Brooks at the February 2025 Denton County Republican Party CEC Meeting. Of the famous John Adams quote, she said, "We must never give away our sovereignty. Right now, we are faced with that very test—the test of whether we will surrender our autonomy to the state."
At issue is the debate about public funding for school vouchers. Brooks said the current options sound "like a solution because we are in a desperate situation." However, she said ultimately vouchers represent handing Texans' freedom to the government. "Do we trust them? Do we trust the representatives who are overspending, who now control our curriculum, who control the tests?"
She said vouchers ultimately mean Texans will lose the ability to choose what children learn, that the curriculum many conservatives are fighting against could become mandated with state funding. Listen in to the presentation.
